The title, Eve’s Covering, represents a few different aspects of life in the cult: the
head covering of Eve’s Mennonite faith, the covering of darkness that the cult
leaders declare shrouds her and dooms her… but ultimately, it represents God’s
covering of protection as Eve struggles to free herself from confusion and escape
the evil that threatens to destroy her and all that she holds dear.

Elsie (Yoder) McKenney was born in Idaho in a little Mennonite community. When her family moved to northern Michigan, they became entangled in a cult. Her debut novel, Eve's Covering,, is based on that experience. Elsie studied creative writing at Ferris State University where she earned the Excellence in Language and Literature award. She is also a world traveler, artist, and has a penchant for all things purple. She does her best writing at four in the morning by firelight. When she isn’t working on a novel, she can be found hiking through the woods, embroidering, or reading in a quiet nook. Elsie is the mother of two adult children and Mimi of multiple grandchildren. She resides in northern Michigan with her husband and soulmate, David, and their cheeky cavalier spaniel, Mr. Bingley.

Real life is just fine without any ups and downs. Who wants to repeatedly dodge pitfalls or live on the run because you are being pursued by a stalker? Silly question, I know, but books would be pretty boring without chaos. Without bad guys.
Many things led up to the pivotal decision I made that changed my life forever. The most important being isolation. The cult leaders (Simon and Marigold in my novel) separated me from my family and friends by planting doubt and fear in my heart…
Stop whatever you’re doing… Stop whatever you’re doing right now and listen. What do you hear? If you’re outside sitting on the deck, do you hear birds twittering in the trees? Children playing? Dogs barking? If you’re inside making tea, do you hear the kettle whistling? Your friend chatting? These […]
Eve’s Covering is a work from my wounded heart. In the process of writing, however, it healed, allowing me to share my story with you. People warned me to keep my story a secret…as if I should be ashamed of it. But I can’t do that. I’ve worked through the shame, and now I’m sharing my story to help others find the courage to face adversity. God rescuing a child out of the darkness of a cult is a miraculous thing! You see, it was God who protected me in the midst of the fire, walking with me through it, bringing me out on the other side.
I recently stumbled across some posts I wrote when I was on my first draft of Eve’s Covering. I even created a website called A Novel Endeavor to document my writing journey. If you’re wondering why you never heard about it-it’s because I never hit the “publish” button. I guess […]

It’s obvious that ordinary is not exciting. It’s what we say when something is run-of-the-mill or hum drum. Blah. Boring. But, when something is extraordinary, it’s more than exciting. It exceeds expectations. It’s phenomenal. The question is, how do we get out of this muddy, slow rut of the ordinary and break into the fast lane of extraordinary?
